There is a new drug to battle in our society.   This new drug is nicknamed "KHAT" and comes to us by way of Somalia, Africa.

The drug looks more like a plant that people chew.   The effect is in line with an amphetamine which means it's an upper.  The picture below is from a traffic stop on I-35 in the 2160 Station.

Indicators:
1. Since this is an upper, your suspect will show signs of being"up", very talkative and seemingly wide awake.  Your suspect will chew on this plant to extract the drug.

2.  The user will either spit the left over plant material into a cup or the floor or out the window.  The chewed up material will look very pasty as if it were green chewing tobacco.

3. The plant has it's best effect the closer the actual harvesting time.  The plant is best if kept cool or frozen.

4.  The bundles will be wrapped with twine-like material and may be wrapped in banana leaves as in the pic above.

5. There really isn't any smell associated with it except for a rotting vegetation smell.

6.  Typically this plant is used by people from Somalia, Africa.  The officer will usually be able to spot the use of this plant by the left over twigs and leaves on the laps of the occupants in the car.

7.  The user will almost always deny the presence of KHAT and deny any use.

8.  The plant is a Schedule I or IV depending on the testing of the plant.  If you sieze some KHAT, be sure to keep the plant cool or frozen until transport to the testing lab.

There is a 13 page report which is located at http://www.anaserve.com/~mbali/pantelis.htm that details the plant KHAT and the study of it.

If that link is dead, we have zipped the pages which can be downloaded.
